In kerala annually approximately 5 Lakhs Tons of Coir –Pith has been reportedly produced. When 1 ton of coir is extracted, 2 Tons of coir pith is produced. Coir pith is not only significant for its nutrients but also a good absorbent of water. Coir pith contains Nitrogen , Prosperous and Potassium; apart from these it also contains the nutrients like Iron, Manganese , Zinc and Copper which are essential for the growth of the plants. In the presence of chemicals like Lignin and Tannin, the plants cannot absorb the above said elements easily and coir –pith will not decompose. By treating the coir pith with a fungus belongs to Pleutotus species the lignin can be broken down and the coir pith become a decomposable organic matter. As the decomposition of coir-pith is completed, it sieved through the machine to remove the tiny fiber, and then the extracted coir pith compost is ready for packing. This is a 100% organic coir pith compost having Nitrogen (1-1.4%), Prosperous (0.06-0.2%) and potassium (1.2-1.4%). The basic coir –pith compost is again enriched by adding organic substances, micro nutrients and micro organisms to give various brands like Ker peat Super, kerapeat Special and Kerapeat Gold.
